Our Story
Friends of the Locust Fork River (FLFR) is an all-volunteer river advocacy organization.
- In January, 1991 The Birmingham News revealed that the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB) was planning to build a municipal water supply reservoir on the Locust Fork River. Several riverside land owners met and discussed the issue and the secretive actions of BWWB. They decided unanimously to advocate for the river.
- They formed the Friends of the Locust Fork River (FLFR) non-profit 501(c)3. In a few short months, other environmental organizations joined with support. Membership has steadily increased since the beginning in 1991.
- FLFR empowers people to steward a free-flowing Locust Fork: healthy water in a healthy watershed for the well-being of all.
- In 2015 FLFR won the Blount-Oneonta Chamber of Commerce Eldridge Bynum Award for Excellence in Community Service.
