FLFR is excited for the opportunity to introduce another generation of environmental stewards to the Locust Fork River, the benefits the river brings to Blount County and the importance of advocacy for and protection of the river, its watershed and the communities therein.

2022-23
Hi everyone! My name is Mia Martinez. I recently graduated from Susan Moore High School and was a scholarship student with FLFR in 2022-23. I am currently studying at Wallace State Community College and have plans to transfer to the University of Alabama at Birmingham to pursue a degree in Biomedical Sciences. I was given the opportunity to be a summer intern and now a full-time intern thanks to the CAWACO RC&D grant. During my time in the scholarship program, I had the privilege to volunteer and discover my passion for working with FLFR. It was incredibly fulfilling to make a positive impact in nature and contribute to something I care about. As a summer intern, I not only had the opportunity to be involved in various programs but also became a certified Alabama Water Watch monitor. I am planning to test multiple sites around Blount County. I look forward to continuing my experience with Friends of the Locust Fork River!

My name is Makayla Pesnell. I graduated from J.B. Pennington High School and was awarded the 2022 Friends of the Locust Fork River Scholarship. I am currently a student at Wallace State Community College.
FLFR is one of the best programs I've joined, because I learned how to help protect the environment in ways I wasn't able to before. I am now working as an intern with FLFR. This opportunity has made me feel like a more important addition to the society I've grown up in.
