If you are a recent HS graduate or college student who enjoys being in the great outdoors of Blount County, Friends of the Locust Fork River (FLFR) has an internship opportunity for you.


FLFR is excited for the opportunity to introduce another generation of environmental stewards to the Locust Fork River, the benefits the river brings to Blount County and the importance of advocacy for and protection of the river, its watershed and the communities therein.

Through the generosity of CAWACO RC&D, Inc., FLFR offers  internship positions to be completed before July 15, 2026. Interns organize monthly river cleanups at various locations, learn about native species plants at the Restoration Nursery, assist on hikes, kayak trips, and the events in FLFR’s Science, Education & Fun activities for children and their families during the summer. They also coordinate the Scholarship volunteers.

Candidates should be college students or recent high school graduates (within the past year), have a love of the outdoors, ability to work as a team leader with high school students, and a willingness to learn new skills and knowledge of the natural world. Open to Blount County residents. Reliable transportation is a necessity.

  • January 1, 2026 to July 15, 2026.
  • Complete 70 hours by July 15, 2026. You are to track hours on a spreadsheet (date, start/finish times, event, brief summary of event); email an invoice for payment to [email protected] upon completion of each 25 hours. Email completed W-9 to [email protected]. 
  • Pay rate is $15.00/hour; payment for 70 hours: $1,050.00.
  • FLFR-related travel outside of Blount County can be included in hours reported.
  • At the end of the internship, submit an essay reflecting on your internship experience.
