This public access park on the Locust Fork River offers a flat, fenced parking area, a picnic area with a table and 2 benches, a stone staircase to the water’s edge, a canoe/kayak ramp, and trashcans. Located in the Town of Susan Moore at the Painter Rd./CR 30 river crossing, this park offers paddlers a safe, smooth 6-mile paddle to Taylor Riverside Park that is perfect for beginners, paddle boarders, families and visitors alike whether locals or from farther away.
The Opening Ceremony was held Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
FLFR created the park on a parcel (.29 acre, 18.4 yards of river frontage) owned by Blount County, with the permission of the Blount County Commission and with the Commission’s agreement to assume maintenance of the park, under the care of District Two Commissioner, Chad Trammell.
Funding for the project was provided by CAWACO RCD, Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, EBSCO Industries, The Nature Conservancy, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Alabama Scenic River Trail, the Blount County Commission, the Town of Susan Moore, the Economic Development Council of Blount County, and donors like you who support FLFR’s river access projects. FLFR is extremely grateful to all of you for helping us bring this new park to reality.
In addition to making the Locust Fork River more accessible for enjoyment and outdoor recreation, urgent needs were successfully addressed by the construction of this park:
— Vehicles are to be parked in a fenced parking area and no longer on the side of CR 30.
— Visitors can walk down to the water using a safe contoured footpath instead of having to scramble over gullies and rocks.
— Paddlers have a canoe/kayak ramp to help them put in and take out.
— Surface stormwater runoff from CR 30 is now channeled and avoids further stream bank erosion.
— This beautiful, family-friendly park replaces a space that used to be semi-abandoned, overgrown, and gullied.
