BLOUNT COUNTY FAIR

FALL 2011

The highlight at the Blount County Fair was the Recycle Relay for Kids, sponsored by the Friends of the Locust Fork River. FLFR volunteers, Cindy Lowry, Sara Rose, Keitha Hudson, Chris Cleveland, and Eleanor Wright were on hand to organize the kids in two teams: red and blue. Each team had to transfer unsorted trash to the right bins. The kids flew up and down the track to the recycle bins until there was no more trash to sort. The YA!FLFR teen action group lent a hand and whooped up excitement with the kids with chants of RReduce, Reuse Recycle Rap". This trash discrimination exercise resulted in a win for everyone! It was fun! It was fast! The kids got it! And everyone left the fair to reduce, reuse and recycle.

FALL 2010

FLFR Education Committee members set up a relay race at the fair to help children understand the value of clean water. There was a short discussion about the average consumption per household per day of 200 gallons. The relay race attempetd to move 200 gallons from one tub to another using 1/2 gallon buckets -- nothing like carrying water to help you appreciate it.
